Rule #1 Analysis Spreadsheet: Minor Update to Accommodate Changes to MSN Money

Update October 7, 2014: Spreadsheet has been updated.  See http://goo.gl/KEm3ar

Update July 30, 2014: - New version 1.4.1 has been released.  See post: http://goo.gl/2gedCi

Update June 21, 2012: - I have added a locked version of the spreadsheet (see above).  This one should not have any data corruption issues.  You would need to click on File > Make a Copy in order to be able to edit it, however.

Update June 20, 2012: - I've uploaded a fresh version of the Google Spreadsheet.  Hopefully, this will eliminate the issues that we've been experiencing with Sales and ROIC numbers going missing!

Hello Folks!  MSN Money recently changed the way it displays some of the data that my Rule #1 Spreadsheet uses.  As a result, everything has stopped working.  Not to worry, I have rectified all of the problems that I was aware of and now, I present to your version 1.3: http://goo.gl/5kscR and a locked version http://goo.gl/TY5iA (which should not have any data corruption problems the other has had)!  Have fun with it!

You'll also find that I've added some more columns to the "Stock List" tab which hopefully will give you some more firepower in evaluating your stocks.  A "Noteworthy" tab has also been added to list out some of the stock symbols that have fairly good Rule #1 numbers.  Beware that some may just show up as good in this screen, but may actually be not-so-good stocks.

Please let me know if there are any bugs, etc!  Cheers!

  2. Hello, I'm worried I edited your file? It works for a few stock looks (and by the way, I appreciate your spreadsheet very much!), but then seems not to work and then when I went to download it again it said, "Last saved 3 minutes ago by" and then my name. Please forgive me if I screwed up something. I want to assure you that I just put in the stock ticker symbol.

Thanks for your time into this spreadsheet! We enjoy it! :)

    1. Hey Mom, thanks for your comment. Not to worry, I have an original copy of the sheet. As soon as I get to a PC (I'm on a train now!), I'll take a look. Cheers!

  3. I see that the last changes were made by Felix now. :) WHEW! Now, how do I download and use it myself? Without screwing up your document again! :-0

    1. Hey Mom, the repairs are complete!

To make a copy of the doc, you can click on File > Make a Copy. That should do it. Let me know if you encounter any problems.

    2. It's "Mom" again! ;-) Wondering if you could make it that you are the only one who makes changes because I think someone did what I did. "Brad" had made the last edits when I just looked at it. And I looked at one stock yesterday and it had an entry price of $82 and now it's $.92. WHOA! :-0 I really appreciate all of your work! Peace be with you!

    3. Hey Mom, I had it locked down before, but some had problems with it...don't recall what. What I suggest is for you to make a copy of the spreadsheet for yourself. Click on File > Make a Copy. Then, you will have that copy all to yourself!

I just checked the sheet...seems to be ok to go now.

    2. Hi Felix, Thank you very much for your effort and really enjoy it. I would like to have a copy of the speedsheet so that I can run it offline. I tried to locate your email. However your email on your About Me is unreadable. Please advise.

  7. I also realized while using your very helpful spreadsheet, that its rendering 1 billion as 1.0 so that if 904.32 Mil came before 1.02b it puts in as a negative number on the stock profile and throws off the calculations

    1. Hello. Thanks for the comment. I checked and some of the cells associated with the sales growth rate were indeed corrupted. I've corrected that. The FCF growth formula seems to be ok. Do note that the FCF 5-year growth is actually 4 years because the data only extends 4 years back. Cheers!

  9. Hello. I think the spreadsheet is still corrupted it is only showing bv, fcf no sales data is coming through at all. not sure what is happening

  10. The spreadsheet looks like a great tool, but it does not work. Running the automation always yields an error "Cannot call method "getRange" of null (line 14)".

  11. This is wonderful Felix!

I am a programmer and am thinking of creating a windows application that does a similar thing. I would like to give it to you if I create it. I have been searching for free webservices to give me historical data that will help me determine what Phil Town writes about in his books.
PBT = Pay Back Time book
    R1 = Rule 1 book
Page of each is followed by a colon in my notes below

    1) ROIC: Return on Invested Capital > Percentage a company makes each year on the amount it has to invest (PBT: 68)
    INV Returns
    Current | 5-year average

    2) Sales Growth Rate: (R1: 70)
    10-year growth rate

    3) Earnings Growth Rate (EPS): (R1: 71)(PBT: 95)
    10-year growth rate

    4) Equity Growth Rate (BKPS: Book Value Per Share) (R1 72, 73, 74) (PBT 70)
    10-year growth rate

    5) Cash Growth Rate (R1 74, 75)(PBT: 76)
    10-year growth rate

    6) Debt (PBT 78, 79)
    1.20

    Sticker Price (R1 147, 150, 154) (PBT 95. 109)
    A. Current EPS

    B. Estimated (future) EPS growth rate (Past Equity Growth Rate: R1 150)
Past Equity Growth Rate | Analyst's Prediction | Lower of the two:

    C. Estimated (future) PE (PBT 96)

Then I can get RESULTING STICKER PRICE

Do you use such webservices in your excel program.

Thanks for any references and/ or advice you can give me!

    1. Hi Anne, I believe everything you need is in the Google spreadsheet. Go here: http://goo.gl/4bmU1 and click on "File" > "Make a Copy" (you'll need to have logged onto your Google account). This will make a copy of the spreadsheet in your own account. From there, you can view the hidden sheets by clicking "View" > "Hidden Sheets". There, you will find all the reference pages from MSN Money that I use to gather the data. Hope this helps. Let me know if you run into any problems.

  12. Hi Felix,

Thanks for the excel sheet. By any chance, do you have any plans to support India in the exchange. It would be very helpful for me.

    1. Hi Joe, Unfortunately, the data comes from MSN Money and they don't have any Indian Stock Exchange data yet. So, it's not possible yet to support Indian stocks yet. Cheers,

    2. Hi Felix,

      Thanks for the quick reply.

For some reason, the MSN Bank Bazar http://msn.bankbazaar.com/ - is the website that supports Indian Stock Exchange data. If that works, would that be possible to work with your excel sheet.

      Thanks
      Joe

    3. Hi Joe,

I checked out Bank Bazaar. It actually looks much different from MSN Money and does not have the 10-year data that is required. At this point, I would not be able to make the Rule #1 sheet work with this data. If you find another website which has 10-year data, please let me know and I can see if it can be incorporated. Thanks.

    1. Hi, thanks for the heads up. The sheet is somehow corrupted...after some passage of time, some of the cells would be deleted. It's been fixed now, but the best thing is for you to save a copy asap, while it still works!

    1. This is very frustrating!! It's fixed for now...I have this original copy which I keep to myself and the data NEVER gets corrupted. Once I create a copy and allow public access (even with the tabs locked down), it starts acting up. Arg...I will create yet another copy for you guys, but keep it locked. You would need to do a "File" > "Make A Copy" and create a copy for yourself from that one...watch for an update to this post.

  16. Hey Felix,

After a few searches using the google docs (Make a Copy version) spreadsheet, it seems like it breaks and keeps coming up with "Invalid Data" or "#N/A", even on stocks I had previously looked at to see the full results. Is this just the spreadsheet being overused, or possibly because I am on a macbook?

Also, have you thought about adding tabs for the MA, MACD, Stochastic charts for the stocks we are researching? With options to change the numbers as per the book? Seems like you're trying to have everything in one place.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Daniel, make sure you are making a copy of the locked version of the sheet (http://goo.gl/TY5iA). The unlocked version has something corrupted due to overuse and I would not recommend using that version.

I would probably not re-invent the wheel with MA, MACD, Stochastic charts...but I may investigate into porting that from, say Google/Yahoo Finance...seems like a good idea. Thanks!

  18. I just read phil towns book on Rule #1 investing and I am really interested now. This looks like a great tool. However. Even when I copy the locked file I still seem to get a lot of "invalid data" coming up. Is there anythign I can do to fix this? Thank you so much for taking the time to make this. ITS AWESOME!!

    1. Hey corystemp, thanks for the comment. I just checked the sheet and it was good. One of the reasons that you have invalid data is that the stock may not have 10 years of data. One good test to use is to use AAPL as the stock. The stock has 10 years worth of data and everything should work properly. If you get a good result, then you know the problem is not with the spreadsheet, but with data of the stock. Give it a try and let me know. Good luck!

    2. I put in AAPL and it shows invalid data on the a year average for sales growth.
